I went to a wedding today
There's nothing like going to a wedding to make you feel like getting married yourself. Also, there's nothing like going to a wedding to give you an idea of what you should and should not do or have at your own wedding:
If you're going to let certain people make speeches, make sure that these people speak intelligibly, and that they're not the kind of people who will try too hard to be funny and fail.
Do not surprise your new spouse by singing a song to him or her in front of everyone. Please. Unless you sing very, very well and have a very, very good band supporting you. Otherwise, it's going to be painful for everyone else in the room.
Play nice music.
This was something that my colleague did which I really appreciated: Make sure that you don't lump all the Muslims or vegetarians together at one table just because they're going to get different food from the rest. Seat everyone according to whom they are comfortable with, regardless of menu. The hotel can sort out who will eat what at each table. At my table just now, Sha.ffiq and I were the only Muslims because we were seated with the other "young ones" from the newsroom. The evening would have been unbearable if I had had to sit with a tableful of other Muslims whom I didn't know or wasn't close to.
If you're going to ask a couple of friends to act as MCs for the evening, make sure they're the kind who won't embarrass you. But since you can never trust your friends not to publicly humiliate you, try not to have MCs.
